Cichlid's are freshwater fish in the family of Cichlidae.
Many of these fish are common aquarium choice's. These fish can range from the apistogramma on the dwarf category (Measuring up to (11.5cm) 4.5 inches) to the larger end of the cichlid scale like the Boulengerochromis microlepis where they can get up to 36 inches long. One of the attractions to cichlids are in the ability to get an amazing array of patterns, colors, size's, and temperaments. These fish can range from fairly non aggressive, to the Parachromis dovii which is extremely aggressive (it is considered by some to be one of the top 3 most aggressive fresh water fish in the world).
When selecting fish for your aquarium, it is highly recommended to research compatibility before adding them to your tank population. A little prevention goes a long way in making the perfect environment for favorite fish.
Central and South American Cichlids:
Central American cichlids are typically in the group called "CICHLASOMA". This group of fish is typically your more vibrantly colored New World cichlid's. Some of these are fish such as
